HAVE A QUESTION TO ASK

Mr Suresh Arora, DGP, Punjab during a press conference said, "The Indian Defence Forces did a good job in Airforce Base".

Does the highest ranked police officer of a state like Punjab not know what the term 'Indian Defence Forces (IDF)' means?

First :
The term IDF is an obsolete terminolgy, first used by the British for a group of Indian volunteers and British Indian conscripts for a part time force raised in 1917 to guard the garrisons and relieve the Army from mundane duties. The present day equivalent of IDF is the Teritorial Army and it does not guard garrisons any more. That is done by the Defence Service Corps (DSC).

Secondly :
Modern India has 'Armed Forces', the Para-Military Forces and the Central Armed Police Forces.

The Armed Forces consist of the Army, Navy and the Airforce.

The Para-Military Forces consist of the Assam Rifles (AR), the Special Frontier Force (SFF) and the Coast Guard.

The Central Armed Police Forces consist of CRPF, BSF, ITBP, CISF & SSB.

NSG is a 'Special Force'. Its has two

components -

Operational, called the Special Action
Group (SAG), drawn from the Indian
Army.

VIP Security, called the Special Rangers
Group (SRG), which is meant for VIP
security and is drawn from the Central/
State Armed Police Forces, popularly
called the Black Cats.

Men who undertook the operations within

the Airforce Base at Pathankot were

coglomerate, under the operational
command of an IG, NSG, consisting

of the NSG (SAG), Army detachments,

the Airforce 'Garudas' and the DSC.

How come such ignorant people

become DGPs of critical states like

Punjab?
